If you hold him and he wants to get down, he will let out the weakest meow, he just cant do it. He is about 6 months old so I figure he should Meow by now. His old owners would smoke weed and cigarettes around him, could that have ruined his vocal cords? Help please!!

  1. I have had my cat for five years now. I have noticed that she has to be comfortable with her surroundings to 'talk.' I actually thought she could not meow for the first six months I had her. It just turns out that she only selectively meows. This is basically when she is not happy with something or it is time for me to wake up and pay attention to her. It may just be that your cat doesn't feel like talking much of the time. However, it's always a good idea to get them checked out at the vet from time to time. Mention it at the next immunization visit and see what the vet says.

  2. HELLO?

TAKE HIM TO THE VET!..IT COULD MAYBE BE DEADLY!

  3. some cats just dont meow,i have a couple like that

  4. hmm, well some dogs can't bark, and he could just have a small meow!

Or some cats maybe cant meow, but i have never heard of that?

  5. They all have different voices.  I've had some that never did anything but mew for their entire lives.

I have a kitten now who cries when held, although he has a tiny voice that is tough to hear and comes out as a small squeak (maybe it's just really high pitched, IDK).  We found the kitten because we heard him from inside when he was out in the median of the busy road in front of our house - so we know he has a big voice, he just hasn't needed it since he's been indoors.

Yours may have a big voice too, he just hasn't needed to use it yet.

  6. My cat can't meow either.  Sometimes not being able to meow could be a sign of abuse in the past.  Other times, just like humans, it is just their "voice" is different than one might expect.  Talk to your vet, but my guess would be that it is just his "voice."

  7. Two possible answers:

    1. He is just quieter and isn't as talkative as other cats.  Just like humans, some people are just more reserved than others.  Here is a website about teaching your cat to be more talkative (if that is what you want lol): http://www.cat-behavior-explained.com/ca...

    2. He has a respiratory infection, a slight possibly of hyperthyroidism or a slim chance of having rabies.  I would guess there would be a possibility of the respiratory infection due to the smoking cigarettes and weed.

Here is a website that goes over the possible diagnosis' and what to do about it: http://www.fleascontrol.com/cat-hoarse-m...

Good luck!  I hope he is ok.  I'm glad you rescued him from a bad environment.  Good for you! :)

  8. Some cats don't meow very loudly ,its normal
