My Cat has serious Respiratory Problems, Is there anything I can do?

My 3 and a half year old cat was born with very serious respiratory issues and the vet didn't even expect her to make it when I had her as a kitten. She goes through stages where she's fine and then I'll find her coughing up blood. We have to give her steroids when those symptoms occur and they fix the problem.. But steriods are bad for her heart and the vet told us she won't live a long time. Is there anything I can do to make her symptoms a little less severe? Put her on a special diet? I really want her to live as long as possible. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
