Hello, I have a 3 year old central air unit. The unit runs all day, and is not getting down to temperature set on dial. Any ideas on what this may by, could it need freon already? Thanks

  1. I'm not an expert, but I HAD the same issue until I added some additional insulation in the attic and a reflective barrier/ radiant insulation on the underside of the roof trusses. Now it is much better. The thing actually cycles on and off. I think it was like $200 total for some R-15 batts and 2 rolls of reflective barrier.

Check the filter to be sure it's not plugged!!!!!!

  2. HVAC Tech.:  There is a definite problem but it doesn't sound major. Start with changing the return air filter. ( Should be changed once a month ). Your evaporator coil could need cleaning as well as the blades in your air handler. You could have one or more ducts crushed or disconnected in the attic. Outside the condenser coil could need cleaning, and you want to make sure the air flow around the unit isn't obstructed. The outside unit fan should be running as well. Good Luck!

  3. What's the outside temperature?  What is the temperature of air being output at the air conditioner grill?  Remember that air conditioners are typically capable of bringing the indoor temperature to about 30 degrees max lower than the outside air.

  4. First, measure the temperature of the air coming out of the vent closest to the airhandler/furnace and the temperature of the air going in the return. You should see a 15-25 degree difference, shooting for about a 20 degree drop.

If you are getting that then the a/c unit is fine and there is too much heat coming in the house and you need to address that, not the a/c unit. (l.e. do things such as keeping drapes closed to keep heat from coming in the windows or running fans when showering or boiling water to reduce humidity).

If the temp drop is much below 15 degrees then the a/c has a problem. Start with that check.

But sure your filters are not plugged up.

    Good luck.
