Question:

My Chinchilla is getting picked on?

I've been letting my Chinchilla play with one of my friend's chinchillas but he's been getting picked on. Today he was actually whimpering on the ride back to the house.

I want to teach him to fight. Should I concentrate on boxing or more of a mixed martial arts approach? I think I've got his right cross pretty solid, but he loses his balance easily. Any advice?

  1. wow, you actually think you can teach him to fight? well you can't and chinchillas can't box or do martial arts!!! what were you thinking...

don't let your chinchilla play with your friend's chinchilla!! that is abuse on your part! your supposed to protect your chinchilla and love him, but your putting him in harm's way where he can get killed...

if you really love your chinchilla, don't ever bring him to your friends house again to play with the other chinchilla, or you'll someday see your chinchilla dead...

  2. Give him a kickass outfit to raise his confidence and give him boots with little weights on them to help him keep his balance!

You should try a mini introduction.  Let the chins interact with each other a little bit before you let them out of the cages together.  If you bring him over in a carrier cage, put the cage up to their cage so they can sniff each other and get used to another chin being around.

Then let them play in neutral grounds, such as a half bathroom (a bathroom without a washer and dryer) and keep a good eye on them while they play around.

You may be making a bigger deal out of it than you should be.  When introducing chins, a little hair pulling and nipping is essential and perfectly healthy and okay.  They are simply showing dominance over the other chin.  A little scratch here or there is fine, but he shouldn't be bleeding for more than a moment if at all.  Have a little tupperware bowl with some flour in it just in case to put on the wound if anything happens.  This is a safe way to stop the bleeding.

I've read that if you separate chins while they are fighting (when introducing), it tends to make them fight more!  And if you leave them be and just monitor them, they'll get over it and be fine.  Interesting, eh?  You could try that, but make sure to perhaps have some gloves if things get nasty to protect yourself a bit.

I don't know if I support chins just having play dates, but it's up to you what you do.  Just make sure you put your chin's health first and as long as they get along, it should be okay.  ;)

NOTE:  If they're all boys and intact, this is probably why.  Due to testosterone levels within their bodies and other hormones, they feel the need to declare dominance by doing such things.  If they're all neutered, they won't be aws aggressive, but they still could be to some degree.  Though they tend to show dominance by humping one another.

  3. I would go with what Pet Vet said.

  4. Martial arts would be better. Let him watch Kung Fu Panda to get the jist of it. Same thing happened to my cat. He got scratched up pretty bad, so I let him watch Jet Li movies, and now they call him "Master Felix".

  5. That's pure animal abuse I see here. If he doesn't like the other Chinchilla, do NOT put them near each other!

That's what the good pet owner would do..

Fighting is not the moral way out of a bad pet relationship. :)
