Question:

My Cocker Spaniel howls at night?

My cocker spaniel is 20 months old. We made a big mistake by letting her sleep in our room. Recently we got another puppy so we decided that we can't have two dogs in our room so we have put them downstairs.I read that the dogs should not be together so at night they are in different rooms. The new puppy is great and hasn't howled at all and sleeps quietly but our first dog is disrupting everyone's sleep.Sometimes she scratches at the kitchen door but lately she howls at various times in the night. We bring her for walks, give her attention, etc but nothing seems to work.Does anyone have any advice for my problem?

  2. It's going to be a hard thing to break. She's always slept with someone. But dogs can sleep in the same room. My dogs always do this. If possible, crate your dogs during the night and leave them in your room. It will take some time before your dog gets used to this.

  3. Your dog has separation anxiety, and that's a tough one to break. I strongly recommend getting a Dog-Appeasing Pheromone diffuser--you plug it into the wall like an air freshener and it'll calm the dog in MINUTES. I had to get one for a puppy whose owner was out of town. This dog would screech something horrible, until I got the DAP. After that, not even a peep out of him!

You can ask your vet about getting one (prices vary) or look on Ebay or Amazon.com for cheaper prices!

    Good luck!

  4. Right - your original dog is now sleeping (or not!!) in one room alone and the new puppy is in another?  Why?  Of course original dog is protesting.  What better, now she has a canine buddie, is for her to sleep with her new buddie.  I would have thought this was ideal?  I agree that, unlike us (lol) now is the time to remove them both from your bedroom, if you have the heart to do so, but leave them together in the kitchen, or wherever.  You can, and probably should for the time being, crate the puppy so she's not bothering your older *****.  Even better is for them to have a big bed so they can snuggle up together.  I don't blame your first dog for protesting!!

  5. I wonder if it would help if the two dogs slept in the same room away from humans for each other's company?
