My Computer's Screen keeps flickering and then turns off?

My computer's screen first Expands left and right a little then flickers, then turns off! When i turn the screenon again the same thing happens.. whats wrong?! My computer is a Sony. Windows XP Home computer

Is it a new Computer/Monitor?

If it is its possible it is just set to the wrong resolution, and cannot adjust itself.  However I don't know how to fix this if it is the answer.

What type of monitor do you have? Brand and model number? We are talking a desktop computer, right (since this isn't posted in the laptop section)?

If it's a CRT monitor, it's probably about ready to die. I've seen what you describe on those before and it never ends well.
