My Coworker Drinks on the Job. What should I do?

I work in IT. Any my coworker always is drinking on the job. By the end of the day he is very close to being drunk, if he is not already. This has been going on for about 3 months now, and he has yet to be caught. Should i tell someone in the company about his issue, or just leave his problem to himself?

Yeah, you should turn him in, preferably anonymously.

You have to turn him in because if you don't, it will just get worse until you end up getting blamed for his f----ups.  However, you want to do it anonymously, in case he has friends that are higher-ups in the firm, they could cause trouble for you if you make waves about their buddy.

i would report it. especially if you feel it is affecting his work. in IT, his work is your work, and if he's not living up to par on the job, then it reflects upon your entire department.

**yeah, no one likes a rat, but what's more important to you? your job, or this slacker? he may be a nice guy, but what he's doing is not right nor is it fair. put yourself first because you are getting paid for what you do best, and he's getting paid for doing something wrong. i'd be a bit offended by his actions if you ask me.

you could mention something to him. tell him that you really don't appreciate what he's doing because he's putting both your jobs at risk. invite him over to drink after work, but let him know that that is just something you don't do at work.

Maybe an anonymous note/ phone call to the boss or human resources dept. If something bad happens it will be horrible. Stay safe.

It is against professional atheics to drink on job. If he has been doing it for so long u must be aware it can effect ur carrier also bcs if managment gets to know then u will also be held responsible.It seems yous coworker has become a Alcoaholic and he needs proper advise not humiliation or repremand, he is a sick man and needs treatment.I would suggest u to go on Alcoholic Annonymus or AA webside and that is one of the greatest organisation in the world to solve this problem. Please dont take it lighly make it a point that u explain it to ur friend, u will be saving one life alongwith his family.

hey if hes gonna drink on the job and not expect you to rat take advantage of that, make him pay you not to tell or even make him share drinks with you

I would take a vacation and make sure that he is responsible for the workload.  It would be best if you know its something that your boss would want to talk to him about so that his boss sees what he is actually doing.  You could, of course, tell your boss that you're on vacation and would appreciate if they kept an eye on your coworker...

No you shouldn't rat him out!  You should not be such a loser and go over and have a drink with him!  IT people do not have to worry about messing up when they are drunk so why not?  Like my dad always says "the day i cant drink at work is the day I turn in my gun a badge!"

You should report him. He could be a safety hazard to other employees or kill himself (or someone else) driving home from work drunk!

I know what will fix this-- when you are sure he is not around drop an AA pamphlet on his desk- then he will realise people know and maybe he will seek help.
