My Craftsman riding tractor won't start?

The battery is charged and it full of gas. Turning the key does nothing. There is a 20 amp fuse under the dash that is blown and if you replace it, it immediately blows again. Model 4000

  1. What does the 20A fuse go to? 20A is pretty chunky, my guess would be the starter motor. If that is the case, you probably have a short in either your ignition system or in the starter motor.

You could isolate the fault and find out where the fault is by disconnecting the starter motor, replacing the fuse and turning the key. If the fuse blows again, the short is in the ignition system and you'll need to look for worn or frayed wires. Perhaps a wire has been rubbing against the chassis somewhere and is shorted.

If the fuse doesn't blow then the short must be in the starter motor. Unless it's something really simple like a terminal touching the chassis, the fault is probably not worth fixing and you'll probably need to get a new one.

    Hope this helps.
