to prove I can handle one. Which one would you suggest? I'm not gonna buy anything big with it. I'll just use it when I go out to eat once in a while or something.

  1. Get a Visa or Mastercard......I'm not sure of the bank or what or if you want to go with a credit union as they often have good interest rates.  Don't put a lot on it, but use it once in awhile for sure....pay 3/4 of it off each month.....then pay off it in full....start over....shows you can make a payment and pay it off......

  2. Get a Visa through a reputable bank, the bigger and more widely spread the bank the better off you will be.

  3. I am assuming by your remarks that your credit is not currently great so I would start with household bank.

  4. Capitalone

  5. yes a cc will help. Do not pay off the balance every month. even if you only leave a little bit on it. This will improve your credit.

  6. chase

  7. I agree with the person who said Capital One. They will give you a $300 limit to start.

I believe their program is that if you pay your bills every month on time for six months, they will automatically increase your credit to anywhere between $1000 - $3000.

Also, it helps *immeasurably* if you pay it off electronically repeatedly throughout the month. So if you buy something for $29 one day, go into your account online and pay it off two days later.

It may sound neurotic, but it shows the company that you are serious about your bills. They have computer algorithims that track your purchase and payment behavior. And it works!
