I am stationed in England right now. How do I re-obtain my SS card. All I have now is a military ID, I need to get my SS card so I can get my licensed re-issued. Do I need to go to the embassy here? How do I go about obtaining a new SS card.

  1. You can get the form on line for a duplicate card.  SS5 is the form number.  Fill it in and follow the instructions.  I got a duplicate driver's license on line when mine was stolen recently.

  2. I am proud of you for serving.

I don't have a specific answer, but I think you ought to go to the U.S. Embassy, or at least telephone them and ask.  I would think that should be the first thing that any American should do when in a foreign country with a question related to state documents.

By the way, I hope you were not carrying your social security card in your wallet.  You are NOT supposed to do that!  That card is supposed to be kept somewhere safe, not carried on your person.  You know the number, and have it memorized, right?  It's not legal for anyone to demand your card for identification purposes.  You can deny them the right to see it.  So leave it at home.

Contact either the embassy, or the Social Security Administration.  They must deal with this thousands of times a day, and probably have a streamlined process for card replacement.

  3. The embassy or consular office, the embassy is in London but there are consular offices in other cities, has the forms to send to the social security administration. A clerk at the embassy acts as an agent. It is a regular occurrence.  It takes 3-6 weeks for a new card.  I can't tell you anything about what your state wants you to do about the DL but I'm pretty sure the embassy won;t help you with that unless you need a certification of some sort.

  4. Call the social security office. If you dont have the number then call the Non Emergency police line or look in phone book. Also you need to make sure you dont have a Stolen Idenity. Yes go to the Embassy and let them know what happen. You dont want to get your idenity stolen so do this immeadietly!
