  1. Low means the don't expect your family to come up with money for college but it's never better because if you can't contribute it severely limits your college choices.

It means you get the maximum Federal funds which is good to cover community college but as you get into more expensive colleges a college will really have to want you to cover the rest of the course. Works well for those who qualify for Harvard level schools, but not as well for most schools and you'll probably end up with lots of loans.

  2. A Zero EFC means that you will receive $4731 (the maximum award available) in Pell Grant funds for the academic year based on full-time enrollment. (If you are enrolled less than full-time, the award is prorated accordingly.)

In addition, a Zero EFC will also help you in qualifying for other need -based scholarships and grants.

If you are attending a public College or University, this should be sufficient funding to pay for your tuition and fees in full with some money left over to apply toward your living expenses.

  3. That means they expect you to pay zero.  However dont count on it fully.  My EFC was 0 a few years ago, but my parents made to much money for me to get anything, even though I did not live with them.
