My FAFSA stated that i got a EFC of 0. Is it good or bad?

I applied to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and i got my Student Aid Report (SAR). It said that my EFC is 0 and it also stated that I may be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant and other federal student aid. I have applyed to Modesto Junior College (MJC).

So is having a EFC of 0 good or bad? If its bad how can i make it higher?

Do i have to contact the college or will they contact me?

How much money will i get? (A rough estimate, please.)

How long will the money last?(apllied for 2008-2009)(it will last a year, right)

What can i use the money for?(examples, please)

Thank you for the people who answer this and to the people who even bothered to look at this.

  1. If your EFC is O that means your parents are not expected to pay for ANY college expenses. You cannot make it any higher.

    Contact your financial aid office.

I go to community college in Fl and get 1500 per semester (my EFC is 0 as well) In Cal, it be perhaps higher (Not by much)

Yes, a year (i.e. an Academic year, only two semesters)

They just gve you the money, you can what you want (i.e. movies, dancing, big TV ---love my--)

  2. That means it is estimated that you wont have to pay anything from your family

    good!

  3. That means your financial situation sucks! But on the other hand, it means you'll get more money from the school! My EFC was 0 during all my undergraduate years and I got my degree for free!  Really, i got paid to get my degree because my fin aid checks were about 2k a quarter, all grants, no loans! Use the governnment wisely!

  4. if you receive a check for ANY type of f.a., you can use it on anything you want.

the guidelines say "school related expenses". but honestly, that can include anything; such as your bills, food, car payment, all of these things help you live while yo go to school

they cant trace what you do with it-its your money.

Stafford loans can be $3-$4K a semester but you paythose back although they are based on financial need. pell grants, i usually have $800-$1200 left over after tuition each semester.

    good luck.
