  1. has your gerbil been with a male gerbil recently? If not your gerbil may be showing that she is ready to mate. If she has been with a male gerbil lately than she might be pregnant. I am not sure when she  will give birth but just have clean towels available and always have here in an area where you can see her and wait. How old is your gerbil? If this is her first pregnancy. You may have to help her with birth. When she begins to show discomfort during birth you may have to (gently) Pull the baby out.

  2. first off lets make sure it is indeed a female because stores are idiots at telling the s*x. when you said it looked like her rear end was swollen makes me think its a male.  they usually look swollen.

well if it is a female then has it been in contact with a male within the last 25 days?  if it has it probably is.  if you have had this gerbil for more then 25 days without any contact with a male then it is not.

if she is preganant then do not touch her stomache while handling her it can cause harm to the babies.she will start showing signs just a few days before the birth. they take 25 days to have a litter.  she will get pair shaped and will be nesting more than usual.  the day of the birth (they generally give birth in early morning or at night) she will be unusually still.  then she will get up stretch and try to find a comfortable position.  she will check herself and do sumersault-like positions.  the first pup comes the slowest and the rest come within 15 minutes.  when the pups are born do not touch the pups, the mother, or the tank untill they are a few weeks old.  take the wheel out when they are babies also so they dont fall off and get hurt.
