My Fathers Last Name Is Quineville(or Quiniville). What Is My Heritage?

i need help on how to figure out my heritage from my fathers side of the family.

the process is basically simple.. work from you father back.. identify his parents and their facts, then to his grandparents, so forth.  When you think about it.. the name only comes from the paternal side. One reason for using documentation is that occasionally, you may run into surprises.. an example may be that your grandfather was adopted, and his real surname was Jones.

Also at familysearch.org.. if you run the name in a quick search, it will show that the name appeared in actual records in both Quebec and France. Barring any surprises, that is the likely route your search will head.  However..you still have to do the research, in order to know WHERE records of your ancestor might actually be.  French explorers went all over the world.. you *could* find that your gr grandfather was born somewhere in Africa or South America, which you would have to know, to determine where to search.

I really don't understand why people use guesswork, saying it "might be" or "sounds like".  Genealogy and guessing are incompatible.
