My Ford Focus got 400 miles to a full tank of gas on a recent trip. How does this compare to other cars?

I drove from Phoenix to Boise (exactly 1000 miles) and used only 2 and 1/2 tanks. I had the cruise control set to 60 mph the entire way.

How does this gas mileage rate on a scale of 1-10? (10 being the best)

  1. bout the same as my bmw 325

    about 7 or 8 i guess

  2. My 2002 Superduty can go 1,850 miles on a tank of gas. It holds 125 gallons of diesel.

It all depends on your tank size to determine your mpg.

  3. My '06 Kenworth W900L will go 2800 miles between fill ups and has a lot more trunk space. LOL.

Seriously though, It really depends on the size of the gas tank, as others have said. When taking my son to and from college, my '90 Ranger 4x4 with a 2.9L V-6 and 5 speed will go about 400 miles on 1 tank. It's 18 years old and has 250,000 miles on it and has about a 17 gallon tank. That is roughly 23 mpg. My sons '04 Dodge Stratus with a 2.4L 4cyl. and automatic holds about 14 gallons and will go about the same distance while using 3 gallons less. Roughly 28 mpg. So, as others have said, it's not how far you can go, but how much gas you use that makes a difference.

All in all, I'd say that yours is about average for most vehicles. I'd still rather drive my truck though.

  4. What do you want, applause? LOL

I wouldn't gloat too much if I were you, because you were only driving 60 mph. At that speed, you should be getting good gas mileage anyway.

As other responders have said, there are other factors to consider, such as how many gallons your tank holds. Another important thing the other responders overlooked is the weight of the vehicle (# of occupants, luggage, etc.,). Did you keep the windows open or closed (open windows increases drag, decreasing gas mileage). Having the A/C on uses up a small amount of gas as well.

But on the surface, it sounds pretty good. Maybe a 7.5 out of 10.

  5. I'm rateing it a solid 9

  6. all car have differnt size tanks...its meaningless to compare...how many piles per gallon is what counts

  7. 8/9 depending on the year of the vehicle. It really does depend on the size of the tank as well. Most Ford Focus's are about 13.5 gallons meaning you are getting about 30 miles to the gallon. Pretty good. Here's a really easy way to see how many miles/gallon you are getting. Fill up your tank, record your milage, drive it around (you do not have to drive it until it's on E though) fill your tank back up, (it's important to fill your tank all the way up both times) then divide the milage by how many gallons you put in the vehicle the second time. Ex. 400/13.5=29.63. Presto.  .  .  Good Gas Milage!
