Okay so i wanted to get a snapping turtle but the thing is, I dont have enough space for a 100+ Gallon tank. My friend kept his snapping turtle since he was born in a 10 gallon tank and its still growing. Would mine do the same? His looks preety healthy but he rarely has space to swim. he swims in place. Can i keep mine in a 10 gallon tank for the rest of its life?

  1. That's extremely irresponsible of your "friend", and I must say, your only comment after hearing previous answers being "sheesh" shows me that you shouldn't own any animal, let alone a snapping turtle either.

  2. I'm surprised that your friend can FIT an adult snapper inside a 10 gallon tank, let alone keep it healthy. A 55-gallon tank is barely large enough. I suspect that your friend's turtle is deformed, with a very deep body. Do not try to emulate your friend. Get the biggest tank you can afford and start saving for a larger one.

  3. That is a cruel and inhumane way to keep any turtle.  Just because your friends turtle is still alive does not mean it has any quality of life.  Please don't get a reptile if you cannot supply for all of it's needs.

Your friends turtle is still alive because reptiles can withstand an awful lot of abuse before dieing.

  4. no no no no!!! Snapping turtles can grow up to 10 inches long! a 10 gallon take is gonna kill him. I built mine a pond outside!!

  5. Its not good to keep ANY kind of turtle in a little 10 gallon tank. Thats about like having poor goldfish in one of those darn fish bowls... its a sorry excuse for a home. Any hobbyist's books will tell u that the minimum for one turtle is atleast a 20 gallon tank, but the bigger the better. Turtles can swim as well as fish, believe it or not, and they need that room to grow. My turtles bask in a kids wading pool in the summer time and they seem to enjoy it alot. I suggest going to Petco or some place and looking for a good deal or a clearance special on a 20 or 50 gallon tank... at the least. They have them going on all the time.

  6. Don't keep it in that tank its too too small

get it a larger tank approx a 55 or better

don't laugh but i kept my snapper in a kiddie pool until it got cold outside then i put it in side in a 30 gallon tank for the winter months
