ay to lay a small layer of weeds (pulled or maybe some straw)to lay the melon on so the its not right on the ground

HOWDEE...i m in Mississippi,,putting straw or hay under melons is ok ,,if you only got a few,,,   don t wait til they are too big,,,do it when they are small,,,, keeps em from rotting if the weather is real rainy,,and ground stay wet a lot,,, also mulching the whole row or around each plant,,will converse moisture,,, melons need lots of water and hot weather   to produce  good size melons,,,also i add  bout a table spoon on ammonia nitrate  around each plant,,,don't git it on the leaves,,

Alot of people leave them on the ground and they turn out just fine, but some people like to put them on some straw pr multch, just make sure your real careful when you move them and stuff  :)
