He will take a drink out of his water bowel and if doesn't suit his needs he goes to the toilet. I have started refrigerating water so that it's nice and cold for him and that seemed to make him pretty happy, however, he's getting a bit to picky. Yesterday we were going fishing out on the boat and instead of kenneling our dogs for the day we decided to leave them outside. I gave them 3 gallons of fridge cold water and even added a tray of ice to keep it cool. When we got home and let the dogs in Bear (GSD) headed to his water bowel.. I added fresh water and he drank every last drop as though he hadn't had a drink all day!!!! He lapped up probably a gallon in a matter of minutes!! I go outside and check his water and it wasn't hot but warm and had a few bugs in it.... Why is he so finicky about his water and how do I keep him hydrated when he won't drink the water left for him?? I've never seen a dog so picky.. how do I break him of this? I mean, if he's left out in the heat and refuses to drink warm water, this could pose a big problem.

  1. My dogs are the same way becuase we do the same thing for them, and now if they have warm water they will look at you whe you are by the sink or the fridge and beg for it they will walk over to their water and back to me or my boyfriend, We just stop giving them ice cold water all the time and they will drink it when they get thirsty enough and they do all of it to

  2. I bought a water fountain for my dog like 7 months ago (he was still a puppy). That keeps the water fresh because it's moving constantly.

Now my dog would not drink from a bowl :)

  3. I had the same problem with one of my dogs.  For a while, she would only eat dry food if it had canned mixed in and she would only drink water that was actively flowing.  This got to be a problem so I started making her earn it.  I take her for a walk for about 45 min to an hour everyday, and I would play fetch with her for about 15 minutes.  With the increased level of activity, she stopped being picky entirely.
