A "typically" German graduation gift. He is from Munich, if that helps.

  1. Typically it is money or valuable items like jewellery, but it is given only by close relatives. My father got a gold watch, my mother a golden pendant and a gold chain - and I, because I asked for it, money for travelling after graduation in the form of traveller's cheques. Now my brother is about to graduate and has asked for a motorbike. :-)

BTW, for the necklace my mother got my grandma paid four times her monthly salary - in today's terms it would be like getting something in the neighborhood of 4000 USD. My grandma did it because she as a single working, labour class mother was very proud that her daughter had become the first academic in her family.

  2. well no not really, but if you think about it hes in the US to exprience US culture, so get him something that he would like. If there was a traditional german graduation gift he would have it already becuase he probably graduated gymnasium (high school) in germany.
