  2. Why do you have a goat?

  3. Soft stool in a goat can indicate several things...

1 - Gastroenteritis (bloat) which can be helped by pepto bismol or baking soda.  Watch to make sure your goat's sides are not extremely distended and that the animal is still going to the bathroom.  This may lead to a blockage in the stomachs or rumen, which can be fatal.

2 - Overeating, whether by gorging themselves on too much grain or hay or being given too much of a new food.  Has your goat had its CDT?  One of the components of this vaccine is to prevent "overeating disease".  Eliminate grain for a couple of days until stool is normal.

3 - Internal parasites or coccidiosis, either of which can really make your animal ill.  Serious amounts of parasites or coccidiosis bacteria can kill your animal as well.  Co-Rid is the recommended treatment for coccidosis, and you can also use a medicated feed if you don't have milkers or meat goats.  Showtech makes a good one with a preventative in it.  Safeguard paste dewormer is standard for goats, although for a persistent problem, Ivomec Plus (for cattle) injectable can be given in the appropriate dosage subcutaneously.

4 - Scours, seen in kids prior to weaning.  This occurs when the milk is not warmed properly or too much is given in one feeding.  Rolled oats is a great way to stop scours.

In any case, rolled oats work great to calm stomachs for any goat and help stop diahirrea.  Cut back on grain until the stool returns to normal.  Give lots of water and hay in the meantime.

You also need to check the animal's temperature (it should be between 101.5-104).  A vitamin B injection should be given ASAP to help with their energy and stimulate digestion.  If the problem continues for more than a couple of days, a cycle of penicillin might also be needed (as well as a call to your vet).

I grow several medicinal herbs that aid in stopping runny stools and digestive problems, including comfrey, lemon balm and peppermint.  Feeding any of these help!

Feel free to email me if you need more specifics.
