Question:

My Golden Retriever Please Answer?

Okay so first of all, I have a baby golden retriever, almost 4 months old now, and he's a very silly little puppy. He loves to run around in open spaces in my backyard. And he loves to sleep about 4-5 hours in the afternoon. The problem is, he keeps chewing on our shoes. If we just leave our shoes outside for about 30 seconds, It's gone, and torn up by his teeth. And he's a very playful and likes to bite me anywhere, hands, feet, or even my hair. He doesn't let go of objects when I tell him NO, and he runs away with it so I don't take it away from him. He howls like a wolf all the time to me, and my mom said that's unusual because he only does that when he misses his mother. For the first week, he was nonstop howling. Now he keeps doing it. He always tries to bite me even when he's not hungry or anything. I know he's teething, but he bites me all the time. Please answer these questions.

  1. Don't leave you shoes outside. He is a puppy and that's what puppies do he thinks you are playing when you chase him and take things away he doesn't realize it is bad. He will grow out of this i love Golden Retrievers they are very smart. Get him some toys that he can play with and start training him new tricks like fetch with ball or stick or Frisbee. Try squirting him with water when he is doing something wrong and say NO! All dogs LOVE shoes maybe you can even give him a pair to keep and let him know those are his shoes and to leave yours alone. My Pit has his own pair of shoes and he can do all the damage he wishes.

  2. Well I can give you a hint on the shoes problem -- one make sure you don't put them where he can get to them and two try some Bitter Yuck or similar product (I think there's one called apple bitter or something) and try that on the places he's chewing. It tastes really bitter and stopped my dog when she was a puppy from eating all of our furniture! Also try rawhides, hooves or KONG -- something that'll keep his mouth busy.

  3. many chew toys and be stern and SAY NO he will get it eventuallly.

  4. Your puppy will continue to chew on EVERYTHING until hes about two maybe longer so I suggest hiding anything that can be considered a chew toy to him, including shoes, clothes, socks etc... This goes for all containers, even if you think he would go near it, he probably will.  continue to give him as many chew toys as possible.  If you catch him with something that he should be chewing, take it away, say a firm NO and give him one of his own appropriate chew toys, say good boy when he starts to chew it.  It sounds like you need to take him to obedience class if you are having problems training him yourself.  When he chews on your fingers say ouch real loud and again give him one of his own toys.  As for the howling, is he alone or ignored? You must tap him on his nose and firmly say NO, when he stops barking say good boy.  Repeat all of the above ALOT!

  5. This is something that I learned from a professional dog trainer. Next time he bites you, yelp/scream/squeal at him as loud as you can, like it is hurting you terribly. This will show him that he is hurting you.  This is how young puppies learn how to play with each other without hurting each other. As far as the shoes go, just try to keep them away from him at all costs. Definitely don't let him get away with anything. You have to take that object back at all costs so he knows that it is unacceptable. Also try to get him toys that he can chew on to relieve his urges to chew. If he is chewing something inappropriate, take it away, say "NO!" and give him something he is supposed to chew, and then immediately praise him for it. Dogs live to please you. He is only behaving this way because he thinks everything is a game and that everything he is doing is acceptable.

  6. get him a toy so he will bite that not u and look for a obedience trainer in yellow pages

    Good luck

  7. Your little guy is teething and will chew anything that he can get his sore little gums on.

Buy lots of chew toys and bones.

When it comes to training try to lose the word "no" as it is too generic instead teach your pup "Leave It".

When it comes down to the biting a good "Ouch" should get the message across.

In severe cases I would use my finger tips to give him a poke on the nose any time he goes to bite and say "leave it", don`t forget to praise him up when he does stop and say "Good Leave it".

Don`t poke him so hard as to make him yelp just a little shock is all you want.

Now chasing him around when he does have something in his mouth that you don`t want him to will never work and he will always dart away playing keep away. Instead start teaching his Recall (come) by saying come, or here, fido (his name) and moving backwards while still facing him. when you aren`t a threat to what he wants to keep he will come to you.

Keep your voice cheery and up beat or he will never listen.

As far as the howling goes teach him the word "Quiet"

don`t yell it and only say "good quiet" when he stops howling or barking so he understands the command and praise him up.

The repetition of these commands will eventually get through to your pup.

Keep all training fun, keep your voice cheery, and NEVER get frustrated when training your dog.

    Good luck and God bless

  8. As for the biting. When he goes to bite -- stick a toy in his mouth. It's what we did with our dog. Don't give him attention whenever he's howling if you have been, that's just an encouragement. As for toys, you need to teach him "drop it". To do this, offer him something better than toys -- food. To do this, hold the food in your hand in secret and then show him the treat, say "drop it" and as soon as it's out of his mouth give him the treat.

  9. Be dominant.  Show him that you are in charge and that he must listen to you.  There is a product called Green Apple.  Its a spray that is readily available at pet stores.  if you cant find it, you should be able to find something like it.  Its a spray that has a very bitter taste and will discourage him from chewing on anything that it is sprayed on.  It works on cats and dogs alike.  You may also look into a shock collar.  Many people feel that the shock collar is an inhumane means of control, but most shock collars have various setting that will allow you to give you're pup a zap without hurting him in any way.  Most shock collars also have a button which causes the dogs collar to beep.  I use this to page my dog, and warn him when he is getting out of line.  you may also look into obedience books.  And let me remind you that the nature of the golden retriever is to please you, so don't get too mad at it :)
