My Golden Retriever seems to be having seizures?

He is 4 yrs old, and it seems every so often (though it is happening more) seems to have seizures, or convulsions, is this normal? Should I take him to the vet?

He just starts shaking and his legs cramp up and become stiff. I usually rub him and talk to him and after a few minutes he's alright.

  1. I would take him to the vet

  2. Seizures are not normal and your pet should go to the vet for a blood test. There are meds on the market that control seizures but they affect the liver. Once the seizures(sz) are controlled you can lean him on a lower dose.

    Good Luck

  3. I can't believe you just asked if you should take him to the vet.  Why don't you take a couple of seconds...think about it, and use your head.  YES...you should.

  4. Vet and now - some causes could be thyroid disorder, or kidney disease - both treatable but won't get better if you don't do something.

  5. Retrievers can be prone to seizures and there can be multiple causes.  Epilepsy is possible, it could also be a reaction to poison though in this case I suspect that is not the issue.  I have an 8 year old retriever who has had a seizure disorder for a number of years.  It was never diagnosed as more than that (i.e. not epilepsy) but we have successfully managed her condition with medication and observation.  She is otherwise healthy and happy and now has very infrequent seizures.  I suggest you contact a veterinarian as soon as possible so they can begin tests.  Keep good notes about the seizures, date/time, the preceding activity, the duration and severity, his behavior after, etc.  After a seizure he will likely be tired but keep an eye out for any indication he is unsteady, dizzy, disoriented, etc.  I have kept such detailed notes for years and share them with my vet at check ups.  During a seizure stay close, keep the dog still and calm so he doesn't hurt himself.  Typically they will ride it through fine.  But again do seek medical help to diagnose and treat.  Good luck.

  6. Sounds to me like he could have arthritis or hip displasia(sp?). Arthritis could be it, especially with the season and weather change. You're best bet is to take him to a vet. So far your doing good. The rubbing and soothing helps.

  7. Get him to a vet immediatly.

If the vet is closed take him to an emergency animal hospital.

Convulsions in any animal are NOT normal.

  8. This is going on while he's awake?!  Take him to the vet!!

  9. did you really ask if seizures are normal?

no they aren't. bring him to your veterinarian. he might be epileptic and they have medication for that
