Question:

My Goldfish Keep Dying, Why?

I have a one gallon fish tank at work, I've had fish tanks before and have had no problem keeping fish alive. I'm wondering if its the well water here that may not be good for the fish. Know any treatments I can get for the water?

  1. yes its the water. theres this bottle of chemical you can get at most pet store. or walmart. you add that to tab water to make it safe for gold fish. and always keep the new fish's original water because it needs time to get use to new water if you just bought it. and when you change water only change half of the tank. and dont leave dead fishies in the tank for too long. it can cause other fishies to die too.

  2. Ask the people at the petstore - It should be near the beta fish :]

  3. One goldfish requires a minimum of a 20 gallon tank with a filter rated for a lot bigger tank.  You will never keep a goldfish or pretty much any fish alive in a one gallon tank.

  4. i have been having some good luck and some not so good luck with gold fish.  what i have learned is that you can't have too many in one tank.  i had 2 in a 3 gallon tank and then had to split them up.  so 1 per 3 gallon tank (though i keep reading 1 per 10 gallon tank).  get a water conditioner that takes out the chlorine and other stuff out (like Stress Coat).  plus good filtration and aeration seem to help.  changing about 20% of the water a few times a week too to keep the ammonia level down since they are really dirty fish.  plus goldfish tend to like cooler temperatures, so if you office is particularly warm, that might stress them out.  good luck!

  5. the goldfish are dying because of the small tank they cant live in such a small tank. they need some room! =) just upgrade to maybe a 5 gal. and you'll be fine! hoped i helped! =)!

  6. hun, the only good thing about your predicament is your using well water, fists, get yourself to a petsmart, find the goldfish you keep and look at the lil tag thats gives the name and the cost, it will have instructions on what it takes to care for a goldfish. then ask a petsmart employee who knows fish to help you determine what you need..

i personally hate goldfish for small tanks, they are pond fish to me because they are some of the most messiest fish to deal with and you cant really stick any other fish with them since they put out so much ammonia which kills fish if you don't keep it at zero.

    remember that ALL

  7. First off a goldfish in GENERAL deserves a 20 gallon tank , the goldfish many not have enough space to live. Did you let the water cycle? cycling should consist of about 2 weeks filter running non stop. Goldfish ,unlike other fish, do not need heaters. Did you add stress zyme and stress coat like you were suppose to? We need more information to answer your question properly. Also , you need a bubble stone(Bubble Stones require an air pump, tubing and a bubble stone or whatever you like that can produce bubbles like figurines you should find the proper equipment in the aquarium section it costs less than 20 dollars so its not that exspensive). You need to change the water out at least every month to keep it properly cleaned.Make sure you don't change out all the water hence the bacteria will die causing your fish to die but at least 1/4 of the tank. but i reccomend you upgrade to a 10 gallon asap. and a 20 gallon when you have the money.remember to feed it goldfish food not tropical fish flakes. Other reasons it might not have the proper diet (frozen food, freeze dried and every once in a while get a 1/4 of an inch cucumber slice to eat on). ( remove within 2 days if not wholely consumed). Goldfish are easy but you need to  take care of them. With the proper equipment and lots of love! Good Luck!(Same applies with fancy goldfish black moor etc.)

  8. It could be anything from sick fish to the water quaility. Also one gallon of water is not much for a fish. The fish may be to big for the tank. Remember this rule: one gallon of water per inch of fish. If you really think it is the water go to your petstore and ask them what they have to treat water and also ick.

  9. you can use bottled water, too. it's cheaper than water treatments.

  10. Do you have the goldfish in the one gallon tank? If so, they're either dying from ammonia poisoning or lack of oxygen. Even a small common feeder goldfish needs at least a 20g tank, with heavy filtration and aeration.
