Question:

My Guinea Pig may have to have her eye removed!?

My guinea pig 'Honey' is facing the prospect of having her eye removed after she was poked in the eye by a piece of hay. I took her to the vets as soon as I noticed her eye was weeping (Monday) and he gave me an antibiotic eye ointment to apply 3 times a day, but today he says that the eye is worse and she is now taking oral antibiotics as well. If her eye hasn't improved significantly by next Monday then he says she will most likely have to have it removed. Has anyone had this happen to their pig, and how did the pig cope with only one eye afterwards? I am also concerned because I know they don't tolerate anaesthetic very well. The alternative is to have her put to sleep which is something I really don't want to do (or am I being selfish?)

  1. If the guinea pig is fine with everything else in her body... get the surgery... pigs dont have good eyesight.....

  2. nasty one eye guinea pig feed it to a snake

  3. I haven't heard of this before. I think that you should go ahead with the surgery and hopefully she will come out fine. I think that if she just takes a bit of time to adjust to only having one eye she may be able to cope. One of my guinea pigs had an operation in which his r****m (which had somehow popped out) was sewn back into his body and he is fine. It should go alright.

  4. Will it then be a Guinea pg.

  5. i wudnt want 2 put my piggy 2 sleep eithr but if that was the best thing 4 it......maybe ask the vet if ur piggy wud be ok with just 1 eye,and ask wud it hurt her 2 hav her eye removed and if he says yes well then......maybe it wud be best 4 her 2 be put 2 sleep but good luck 4 u and ur piggy :)

  6. Well you done all you can for now. It's really in  God's hand and the vet's.She may inprove dramatically, over the week -end.You never know with these animals and they always surprise me.

I've had one die after surgery when the vet and I, thought all the indications were good that he would live.

I had one operated on for cancer,2 years ago.The vet said it was not good and the cancer would come back. He's still alive and doing fine.

Abdominal surgery is risky. If you have a good vet, enucleation of the eye may not be that bad an operation.

    It's a real toss-up.

    Good luck.

  7. well i dont have a guinea pig but if i were that animal i wouldnt want to have and deal with that pain so i would want it gone and if losing an eye will help then i say have her eye removed, and then if the guinea pig starts having more problems or its not doing much better then you should ask a doctor. because if she stops doing things *no running, playing, or anything, just sitting there all day* it may be that she has given up on herself and therefore might have to put her to sleep.

  8. omg.....I am so sorry to hear about your Guinea Pig. I have no experience with them but I just wanted to comment on the stupid people who answer very very rudely. Anyways, I dont think your being selfish, I would go ahead and have the surgery and see how he is. i hope he turns out well.
