My Guppy Rylie just had 14 babies last night! We have them in a separate bowl that doesnt have a fillter and doesnt produce bubbles. Is this an OK enviroment? Do we just feed them ground up fish food and how often do we feed them? Any advise would be helpful! Thanks in advance!

  1. that's great news.

I'm sure the separate container would be fine without a filter for at least 4 weeks, but by then they will probably be big enough to go back in main tank.

If there is no pump and heater then i wouldn't worry if the tank is room temperature about 20-27 degrees.

What the pump does is moves the top of the water to get air in the tank, this can also be done by just moving around your finger every time you feed them for about 30 seconds.

When my guppies had babies or fry, I fed them normal flake food broken up about 3 times a day. Give them a very small pinch each time.

I really hope this has helped.

  2. Hey,

I am an experienced guppy breeder and i still place all babies in a fish bowl.  You can keep an eye on them better that way.  I currently have 30 in my bowl at the moment with another 3 ladies about to drop.

Your absolutely fine to have them in a bowl but it is vital that you get a small heater to submerge as they do require warm water, otherwise get a hatchery for in the tank, personally i would recommend the heater in the bowl.  You do not need ANY decor as they are calm fish and do not like hiding as they are 100% sociable. After a week or two they will come over to your side of the bowl to get fed when you approach.  Very cool.  To feed i place fish flake food in a wee plastic sandwich bag and keep rubbing it together to get a fine powder.  I feed them 3 times a day.  Very important..  Also remember to clean the water at least every 4 days.  Just transfer them to a cup whilst you are doing it.  Use water from the tank to add to the bowl.  Also as you may have noticed i  have not mentioned a filter.  You do not need one f you water change regular.

    Hope this helps :-)

  3. yes feed them crushed up fish food that you give their parents, make sure it is very very very powdery for new borns and when they get big you dont have to crush it up as much.

Yes that is OK just make sure you keep it clean! put rocks in the bowl (light colored rocks if the fish are dark, and dark colored rocks if they are light) and put a plant or 2 in it so they feel safe!
