My HDMi cable doesn't work...?

I have just bought a Philips MCD988 dvd system, and have connected it to my Panasonic Viera TV. The sound from the DVD comes out of the MCD's speakers but I have no visual. Worse still, I used the scart lead provided by Philips to start with and had visuals ok, now, since trying the HDMi cable, the scart no longer works, in fact I get a big fat 'hum' when I try to use it, so I am now worse off than before. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP??!!!

  1. Be sure that the TV's input selector is set for HDMI .

Use the remote, press "Input", set it to HDMI.

  2. so get a new set up that works

  3. I'd reset the DVD player.  Unplug all the cables from the back of the unit, and unplug the power.  DVD players never really shut off, that's why you can use a remote to turn them on.

Then, just plug the HDMI and power cables in.  Turn the TV to the proper input channel, and see if it works then.  If it doesn't, try the HDMI cable on another device.  If that has a picture, the cable is fine and it's your DVD player's HDMI port.  If not, you should return your cable and get a replacement.

  4. Be sure your TV is set to the correct input, then turn everything off. Power up the Philips first, then the Vieja. Your TV will send a hot-plug-connect signal back to the Philips initiating the HDMI handshake sequence.

If that doesn't work, replace the cable (spend a little more this time if you bought a cheap one) and try the above steps again.

That should work, but if not, take the Philips back to the store and have them demonstrate a picture with HDMI. If the Philips passes the test, call for service on the Panasonic.
