Some blue ray discs says it support 1080i, 720p, both or just state that it is true HD at 1080p Period. So if I pop a Blue Ray that only states that its 1080p into my player will my 720p HDTV be playing just 480p quality or will it convert into 720p automatically. I suspect that a blue ray disc that does not state that it supports 720p will not be able to go High definition because of my limited HDTV at 720.

  1. Your TV will down-scale the BLUE Ray signal to your native resolution - 720p. Better yet, see if your Blue Ray player can be set to down-scale to 720p. This will improve the overall picture you see on your TV as now your TV's processor will not be burdened by the additional processor load of down-scaling.

  2. If the blue ray disk says that it supports 720p and 1080i, then your blue ray movies will show 720p, but not 1080i. Even if the blue ray disk says true HD at 1080p, your tv should play the movies at 720p. I don't think some blue ray movies support 1080p and not 720p
