Question:

My HP laptop all of a sudden stopped working...?

I can turn it on but nothing shows up onscreen, and then it emits a few very loud beeps in the space of 1-3 seconds. Then nothing else happens. The screen just stays blank. It was working absolutely fine the day before but now it's just not working. I'm scared that it's a problem with the hard drive because it contains all of the music I've made over the last year and a half. Please help.

  1. That signal is either a power supply or motherboard failure.

  2. This sound like something has come unhooked inside the laptop, it will probably be the memory stick, remove the cover and check that the memory in seated in it`s slot ok (there maybe 2 sticks), also make sure that there are no loose connections while you have the cover off.

  3. Suspect the screen not the hard drive - is it a HP Pavilion?

If it is - these have always had a problem with the screens - I had two HP Pav's and they were c**p for screen issues - always going.

If you can - connect the lappy to an old CRT monitor via the port at the back - if you get a screen - the HP lappy screen is dead

Added: Your Pav has done the same as my two did - for some reason the HP screens on Pavs were c**p - both the Pavs I had the backlight/LCD matrix went - too expensive to reapir - cheaper to buy a new lappy to be honest.

Try what I said first though to make sure - take it round to someone with an old CRT monitor and unplug it and connect to your laptop - if the CRT fires into life - then you know it is something to do with the laptop screen

  4. the loud beeps are definitely from the motherboard.  depending on the rate of the beeps you can tell what the problem is.  I wouldn't think it was your hard drive or your monitor.  Just dont take it apart to try and find out!!!!

  5. I'm not totaly sure but a similar problem happened to my old pc. It turned on, but like you said its black and there is a loud beeping sound. I was something wrong with one of the peices of memory inside the computer and it had nothing to do with the hard drive. I hope this helps. Get it checked at a computer shop.

  6. Take It To A Computer Menders Shhop, They Fixed Mine, And Im Sure They Will Be Able To Fix Yours To :) x

  7. I do not think Laptops have Power Supply failures, but I guess I'm not the best person when it comes to that. Either way, I think it is a problem with your RAM.. You really ought to get it checked from a computer store before you ruin it further in your attempts to get it working.

  8. just check there isnt carbon on  RAM.

  9. You should listen to the beep code (how many short/long beeps?) the link below gives beep codes and their meaning, you need to know what bios type you have (award, ami, pheonix etc) the one shown is AMI, the links on the right give the codes for other bios types:

  10. if it is emitting  beeps then it might be a problem with your RAM. bcoz most of the motherboards beeps after RAM faliure
