My Happy Face and Beholder tentative for the Breeders’ Cup Fillies Juvenile
Though, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies field is packing up already to run on 2 November, 2012, at Santa Anita Park there is still room for a few to make last minute entries and among those are Spendthrift Farm’s 2-year-old filly, Beholder and Rudy Rodriguez
trained for Michael Dubb’s juvenile My Happy Face.
There was room when the Spinaway Stakes runner-up, Sweet Shirley Mae got scratched from Grade 1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park over a mile I doubtful for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and that is where My Happy Face comes in the picture.
The Kentucky bred daughter of Tiz Wonderful, My Happy Face is exiting a second place finish by a head to Dreaming of Julia in the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes, but despite the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies lineup in flux, plans haven’t been made yet, according
to trainer Rudy Rodriguez.
The deadline for the Breeders’ Cup pre entries is 22 October, 2012, and right now the connections of Beholder are debating over either sending their juvenile filly to the Juvenile Fillies or the Juvenile Sprint, or the third option is to enter her in both
and then decide later.
Meanwhile, the 2-year-old filly by Henny Hughes will work sometime before the deadline under the watchful eye of trainer Richard Mandella.
Out of Tricky Creek mare Leslie’s Lady, Beholder is exiting a brilliant six furlong sprint in an allowance race under jockey Garrett Gomez on 4 October, 2012, when she won it and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 108, as she downed 6 furlongs in 1 minute and
9 seconds flat.
“It’s too early to make any decisions,” Mandella said. “We’ll get her back to the track, see how she looks this next week. The simplest decision to me is to just run her in the Sprint. But you hate to give up the idea of going in the big one, the Juvenile
Fillies, with more money and more prestige, if you thought you could do it.
“If she’s doing well enough, I may pre-enter both races.”
Meanwhile, after the gutsy Frizzette run, My Happy Face moved back to the track yesterday, but don’t be fooled by her defeat, as she came off a 21 length maiden romp at Saratoga at second asking.
