My Holmes brand Humidifier has white chips coming from metal bulb inside

Question Details: I was cleaning my humidifier out tonight, and found small chips coming from the inside. I poured 3 cups of boiling water in and scrubbed around, more larger chips came out. I have been so sick lately and running that humidifier for 5 days.

Then, went on a trip out of town for 2 days and feel so much better. I thought it was the robutusin, but now considering that humidifier could be the culprit

. Does anyone know why humidifiers create litlle chips? and if they could be bad for you.

Thanks

  1. It is calcium in your water, nothing more. Clean the unit by soaking in white vinegar, that will dissolve the calcium...rinse well, then use a mild solution of chlorox to decontaminate the unit...bacteria can build up in these things and they should be sterilized occasionally;. Good luck.

  2. it is by the  called effluence

it is the mineral residue of moist air. I have never heard of it being harmful.
