We are going there for 2 weeks to look around and see where we would like to get some investmant homes and a home for us and kids to live. We will hire a car and take children 10,11 and baby. My question is what is the best rout to see the country? Which towns are good to live/invest in and also we would like to look at some sheep farms and try out farming. Also some sightseeing and something for the 2 older kids as they will have to decide if they will live with us or their mum. Also when is the best time to go?

Cheers!

  1. My hubbie and I used to live south of Hobart around the Huon Valley. Beatiful area. And we are actually buying down there right now near the trout fishing area about an hour north of Hobart.

Here's a site that tell you all about the area's in Tassie and stuff to do:

    http://www.discovertasmania.com/

Now with homes and inverstment houses you need to get on to these 2 websites if you haven't already:

    www.realestate.com.au

    www.domain.com.au

And check out the houses you like for your home and prices you are willing to pay. Now I live in Brisbane and house prices down there, while they have risen , they are nothing like Brisbane. Investment places are actually pretty good down there compared to what Tasmanians sell for and there rental prices you are close to completly positivley gearing. When on the real estate sites check what the sale prices for houses in an area are compared to there rentals in the area to get a good deal. Stick to area within an hour of hobart, maybe lonnie and burnie but i would stick to hobart.

As for the kids unless they like the outdoors they probably will not like tassie much. They are a little behind down there but that's what I love about it down there. There's a wildlife place in the middle of no where (hour out of hobart) called WILD. There's also the limestone caves and hot springs most kids love (again an hour out of hobart but south). There's heaps of fishing and bush walks too.

Hope that helps. But have fun and we may bump into each other as I'm going down again next week.

  2. I made my 'cold change' nearly 3 years ago and have never been happier.

I would suggest starting in Hobart, down to the Tasman Peninsular, then up the east coast to Freycinet, onto Launceston, the North west (Burnie, Devonport), then down to Queenstown, Strahan and back to Hobart. Or approximately the same route if you start in Launceston or Devonport. If you then have time check out the Midland especially if you may be interested in farming.

Housing proces have been on the rise here and it is not a cheap as it once was, towns depends on how large you want them.. Generally inner Hobart is the best investment opportunity or the seaside retreats like Swansea or Bicheno. April is  a nice time generally cool/cold nights but the days will be pleasant
