  1. Bird mites can be VERY dangerous.  You really need to deal with this and in addition to the soap solution that has been recommended, I would suggest that you get something else to spray around the kitchen.  Since this is a food hadnling area, I woudl be cautious of using harsh chemicals though and would lean towards a chemical free solution such as Kleen-Free or another enzyme based cleaner.

Kleen-Free is known to be able to control bedbugs and other small pests on contact so having some handy amy help in this case.

Good luck and definitely deal with this quickly and effectively.

  2. Birds carry a lot of undesirable critters on them.  There are also a lot more that hang around nests to clean up waste products.  None of these creatures are particularly desirable in our kitchens.  All insects can be killed by soap.  If you add soap to water that undrownable ant drowns.  So you need to wash every surface in the kitchen.  You should also run all your dishes and silverware through you dishwasher(hand or automatic).  I'm assuming you already washed the vent with an ammonia solution.  I would recommend the ammonia be used everywhere but many people find it hard to breath using straight ammonia.
