My Leopard Gecko hates when I touch him or handle him. He used to be with my sister b/c he got him for free and she kept it for her daughter. and she hated holding them and her daughter was to young to handle them. And they where never Handled.

I was holding him one time and he jumped out of my hands and I had to hurry up and get him. one time I went to pick him up from his cage and he jumped and did this flip type thing and landed in the water.

Im so afraid hes getting hurt.

what should I do so he gets used to me.?

  1. mines a bit jumpy, and doesnt like being held, but she loves to come out and climb on me, so i make sure i am sat on the floor,so she wont fall far, and make sure that she cant run off if she gets on the floor, i sit inside my guinea pig indoor run

  2. Usually leos are shy and squirmy creatures by nature but they will settle down greatly if you continue to work with them. We work with a pair at school and even though they did come to us very shy of human interaction, the daily interaction from students did a wonderful job and they eventually settle right in. Now they will contentedly sit on my shoulder and enjoy very much being pet between the eyes right on their head. They are very interesting lizards to keep. So as I said before just continue to work with him. Keep handling sessions short but handle a few times each day and make sure to support his body when you hold him keeping his body secured in the palm of your hand but not too tight, just tight enough to make him feel safe. Make sure not to grab him by the tail because they have a detachment mechanism where their tail can fall off(it will regrow but its wont look much like the original) and and just work with him. He will settle down eventually with attention :) I wish you the best of luck :)

  3. well in dogs and cats you get a towel and rub it on you skin so your smell stays and let them sleep on it so they get use to your smell. I'm not sure if it will work on Leopard Gecko but give it a try. :]

  4. Short frequent handling sessions. A few times a day for 2 or 3 minutes at a time to begin with. Just pick him up and hold him. Don't pack him around, don't show him to people, don't stroke him. Just hold him until he starts to get used to you. Then slowly increase the time.

Oh and make sure you either keep a firm grip on him or keep him low to the ground so he won't hurt himself should he fall. Like sit at a table with him or something
