My MP4 player won't play video files?

I have just bought a dodgy MP4 player. It states that it plays Avi files and came with an avi music vid pre installed. I have tried to put a avi movie trailer on and it says "File format error". I have a file converter but what should i convert it to?. The avi that was pre installed just said AVI but the avi i download all have xvid avi on them. help!
