The connections keeps cutting in and out. The person on the other end says its OK but sometimes I sound like I am in a tunnel.

  1. I don't know how what chip or much RAM you have on your computer, but that may be a problem too.  If using Windows XP, 1 gig RAM may be enough and 2+ would be ideal.  But, if you are using Microsoft Vista, 1 may NOT be enough and 2 may be the MINIMUM that you will need.  I was just looking at some new Vista laptops today and noticed that some are now being sold with FOUR gigs of RAM, so that is probably a good indication that Vista could use most of that.

There are other ports that need to be open for Magic Jack to work best.

The above site has all 3 you'll need listed.  I checked on this and my understanding is that at least ONE UDP port from 5060 to 5070 is needed - NOT all eleven within that range.  It tries 5060 first and if that's blocked, it moves on to 5061 (and so on down the line).  I have also seen 5061 listed as the main one you want to be sure is open.

If you don't have a fast connection (with a decent upload speed of 512K+) and a pc with plenty of horsepower, call quality may suffer.

    Good Luck!

  2. Many factors can cause poor performance with VoIP calls.

Your Internet speed needs to be as least 1.5 Mbps for reliable performance.  But, that alone isn't enough to guarantee good performance.  Don't surf the Internet or download files while talking on VoIP - see if that makes any difference.

Make sure your Router isn't blocking SIP ports 5060-5070 UDP.  MJ uses SIP ports 5060-5070 UDP.  Your Router will need to "Port Forward" those ports.  Otherwise, operation will not be reliable.

Make sure Windows Firewall isn't blocking MJ.  Windows Firewall will also block needed ports.  So, check it's settings and make sure MJ is allowed to pass through Windows Firewall.
