Question:

My Mare's Leg?

Eh, today, my mare, Charm, was acting out and throwing hissy fits, so I checked her out and nothing seemed to be wrong, until I got to the back of her leg, there's a big pimple - like bump right before you get to the hoof, I had no idea what it was so I called the vet. He's not coming out till tomorrow, so, do any of you know what it might be? Its a bit to big for a bug bite.

Anyone think they know what it is???

Thanks!

  1. probably an absess or even a fever bump.

  2. an allergic reaction to the bugs being around that area so frequently. A mare at my mare has them all over her underbelly. I don't think they are harmful, but just incase deffenatly still talk to your vet!

    good luck with the leg

  3. Sounds like an absess on the cornet band.   Its basically a zit, and will drain over time.   It is very painful for them so I would suggest little exercize.  :)   goodluck

  4. Probably an abscess.  It's pretty common for one to start in the hoof and then work its way up to the cornet band.  Usually from a stone bruise.  You can give bute.  You can start soaking the foot in warm water to help draw it out, but it will erupt on its own.  After that, it will need to drain and then let it heal from the inside outward.  Go ahead and get vet wrap, cotton, duct tape, and Betadine ready.  Your vet may give antibiotics.  They usually heal nicely in a couple of weeks.

One danger is that the horse will shift too much weight to the good leg while the abscess heals.  This can cause laminitis in the good leg, so do monitor for that and don't keep her in a stall for long periods when she's favoring the leg.  Turn out should be fine with proper bandage.

  5. absess

  6. I would definitely suspect an abscess about to blow...good thing the vets coming tomorrow. I would go ahead and start soaking her hoof in warm water and Epsom salt for about 30 minutes twice today. It will do no harm, should it be a false alarm.

  7. Is the bump on the coronet band (where the hairline meets the hoof)? If so, it could be an abcess about to pop.

  8. probably a quittor which is an abscess that has migrated from the foot to just above the coronary band.
