  1. Some maiden mares do personality changes when they come into season (It's referred to as "season", NOT heat as in dogs and cats).  Depending upon your mare's breeding, you may "consider" breeding her and seeing if that doesn't settle her down.  HOWEVER, the drawback is that the horse market sucks right now.

Spaying a mare is a permanent solution, however if something goes wrong and she becomes unsound, she'll be treated MORE like a gelding than a mare.

  2. \We had a mare that you couldn't even ride when she was in heat because her back got so tender back where her ovaries were...not to mention she was a total b*tch :)

It was actually a very quick and easy procedure. They don't have to cut them open or anything like a cat or dog. They just go in vaginally and have this little thing that grabs the ovaries and they essentially twist them off. Her recovery time was a month or so, I can't remember exactly, I believe and we noticed behaviour difference pretty much immediately. She calmed down, was easier to handle, and then we could ride her all the time. It was SO worth it.  I'm not sure if all vets do this but it's an idea, anyway.

  3. There are feeds you can try, but you can also have mares spayed.  If you can find someone that does it, then you can spay them for $150.  However do not use a vet that wants to open her up.  Find someone that goes in through the v****a.  This procedure has few complications.
