My Miss Aurelia topped the field of 14 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies
My Miss Aurelia the newest princess of racing on Breeders Cup day when she shot away from the field under jockey Corey Nakatani to win the Grade 1, $1,818,000 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs on 4 November, 2011.
It was an awesome performance from the 2-year-old Steven Asmussen trained filly who was sent off at 2 to 1 odds, favourite to win the race as she lived up the expectations of her connections.
The Kentucky bred daughter of Smart Strike, out of My Miss Storm Cat by Sea of Secrets, My Miss Aurelia finished an undefeated season as she came into the Breeders’ Cup off a three race win streak and she topped off the perfect season with a Breeders’ Cup
win.
Under jockey Corey Nakatani, My Miss Aurelia after breaking perfectly from the gate had to endure a wall of horses coming her way as she disappeared in the sea of horses.
After getting settled in the race, My Miss Aurelia stalked the pace of Candrea and maintained stalking her for the next five furlongs 1 1/16 mile long race.
Candrea set fractions of 23.20 seconds and 47.19 seconds. Apart from My Miss Aurelia, Grace Hall entered the race with the unbeaten status, and so did Weemissfrankie, they were also the second and third choices in the field after My Miss Aurelia.
My Miss Aurelia in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies sped away from the field I the stretch, and the move was obvious when the rounded off the final turn passing Candrea on the outside for the lead as she completed the last six furlongs in 1 minute and
13.08 seconds as My Miss Aurelia topped the 1 1/16 mile distance in 1 minute and 46 seconds flat.
“She broke really well," Nakatani said. "My main concern was getting her in a good spot so I had options to go outside or inside or to the lead. Actually, she put herself in just the right spot."
Prior to the Breeders’ Cup win, My Miss Aurelia went on to bag the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes over a mile and the Grade 2 Adirondack over at six and a half furlongs at Saratoga.
