Question:

My Mom was diagnosed with Aortic Valve Stenosis by echocardiogram ?

The test showed "moderate to severe" stenosis of the aortic valve. She doesn't see her cardiologist until 5 weeks from now. Until then, I am trying to stay positive for her but I am concerned that she will need valve replacement surgery. Is there medical treatment instead of surgery?

  1. I think there's nothing worse than a mom being sick. I don't know where you are, but they can attempt to open her valve with a catheter with a ballon on the end.  It's called a valvuoplasty.  It's an option that they might be able to try. They can treat her with certain types of medication or surgery might be the only option for her, you are going to have to bring you concerns with you when you see the cardiologist. What are your biggest concerns about her having her valve replaced? She would probably feel better with surgery They might want to do a coronary angiogram to study the arteries of her heart as she might need bypass surgery.  All of these conditions are treatable, and that's the positive aspect you should be focusing on.

  2. First of all, I'm so sorry.  That must be really tough.  I don't think there's any other option, or at least any better option.  I don't think stenosis is reversible.

  3. no

  4. have her write down all of her questions and get on the wait list at the cardiologist's office for an earlier appt.  go with her and have the questions answered BEFORE leaving.

  5. Have you spoken to her physician? Maybe there is a doctor on Answers, but then even a doctor won't tell you unless they know the specific case. That is for liability reasons.

Please talk to mom's physician and if you are not happy see if she will go get a second opinion. Good Question. Look it up on webMD, but remember that YOU are not a doctor and that each individual's case is different.
