My Mum has never met my fiance, but she wants to get him a gift - what's appropriate?

We are on opposites sides of the world so it needs to be something small and practical enough to be sent in the post, and she wants it to be personal but that's hard when they've never met! I have a few ideas but would be interested in opinions and suggestions.

I know it may sound cliche, but how about something like cufflinks?  Something he can wear at the wedding, practical, not over the top, and not too impersonal.
