Question:

My Neighbors Park in Front of My House?

Each house has enough street parking room for two cars. These people have three cars that they insist on cramming into their two spaces. I did not want to start out on bad terms with them, so I habitually left them an extra 1/2 car length so their three cars would fit. My husband and I park two cars out front and his pick up truck out back. Each of our houses has ample room out back for parking as well, but the neighbors will not put any of their vehicles out back (I assume because it is a longer walk to the house.) Recently we replaced one of our two cars out front with my husband's project car because he got tired of mowing around it. This seems to make them particularly angry even though it does not take up any more room than the other two cars did. I am tired of these people backing up on my bumper and continuously giving me dirty looks. I have already allowed them some extra space; do I really owe them anything or should I stand my ground?

  1. I'm sorry, I know this doesn't help you, but it just makes me think back to the jerky neighbors I've had before like that....That's why I moved to the middle of nowhere, and no neighbors was the criteria for the new house.....

My opinion, since it doesn't sound like you're on the best of terms with them, stand your ground, in fact, I'd take back that 1/2 a car length as well.  Being the type of person I am, I'd stand by and watch, and when they hit your car, I'd have a big fit, call in for an accident report(assuming there's some notable damage), and let their insurance buy you a new bumper.  Maybe their insurance rates going up will be enough for them to see the light to being a proper neighbor :)

  2. Why can't people just talk to each other?

  3. If it's a public street, they can park where they want.  Sorry

  4. Old English proverb, "Give them an inch and they will take a mile".

Stand your ground or surrender the street.

  5. You are right for wanting to be on good terms with them but if there is enough space for only 2 cars then they should either do as u did and then make enogh room for alll 3 of there cars! stand your ground! i am guessing that you are young and this is one of your first homes so stand your ground and if they are hitting your bumper on purpose talk to the person in charge of your neighbor hood and if you don have one of those and the neighbors wont quit parking at yourr house you and your husband should use all the space so that there is no way the neighbors can park near you!

    allways

love and peace and good luck

  6. I would contact whoever sets the parking restrictions and ask them what rights you have in this situation. They may be able to offer you some advice that will give you an idea how to handle your neighbors. Have you tried speaking with them yourself? Maybe they don't know about the restrictions.

  7. Stand you ground. You gave them space, and if they are ungrateful idiots, too bad for them.

  8. talk to them.  maybe they don't realize that they are supposed to use only two spaces.

is your project car movable and licensed?  we can't have a car in our driveway unless it's running and licensed.

  9. Stand your ground. Too bad for them.

  10. It's a public street; people can park where they wish.  Although I do agree it's annoying when people don't use their own available space on their property.

In my neighborhood, people use their garages for storage and park on the street.  Grrr.

  11. As long as it's street parking with no legal "No parking" sign, first come first serve. It's a public road which is open to the public to park. The only spot by law that is reserved for you would be your driveway. Being that they're acting that way, I wouldn't even give them the 1/2 spot.

I had a similar thing happen in Amarillo, we had a 1hr drive to work so we car pooled, we'd all meet in the morning and we would park along the street in one of the guys neighborhood. We constantly had little notes on our windows about not parking in front of peoples houses. Even when I parked on the side road I got signs finally I was like s***w it. I put a sign on my car "I pay taxes too and probably more than you do"

Oh and if their hitting your bumper, I would file a police report and contact the insurance company, just a crack in the bumper paint justifies a claim.
