  1. You need to check with the local and state laws.

In some states grade K is still optional, but 1'st grade is mandatory to attend. If K is manatory then he may need to repeat it.

  2. Hmmm...like others have said, it depends on your state/school district and really...the child.  Did they do any "home-schooling" with him?  If they were going to be gone the whole year...why didn't they enroll him whereever they were at?  But that is done and over with.  What does your nephew need?  We wouldn't recommend him being in First Grade if he's going to be behind everyone...whether cognitively or socially...because it could cause a bit of a problem with motivation and the love of learning/school.  He will not be the only 6 year old in Kindergarten.  My son will be six soon after school starts due to his birthdate and he's attending Kindergarten.  Good luck in your decision making.

  3. It would depend on what state he lives in-- is Kindergarten a required grade in that state? In some states it is and in some it is not. I can't help but wonder why he didn't go to school wherever he was. In my opinion, he should not skip Kindergarten regardless, because these days Kindergarten is not just play, there are a lot of academic skills they must learn in Kindergarten. Without that background, first grade will be a struggle. My suggestion would be to talk with the first grade and Kinder teachers at the school he will attend to see what the academic expectations are.
