My New Home sewing machine won't back stitch all the time. Is there anything that I can do?

I don't want to put it in the shop if I don't have too, I am short on funds. What could be the problem? most of the time it doesn't work and when it does it only does for a little while. I tried taking the throat plate off and cleaning everything but that doesn't help.

  1. Even though it's expensive, the machine has to go for a clean and tune once a year. There are parts you can't reach.  It will probably catch the problem.

  2. I don't know what kind of sewing machine you have.  But, since it's new you should have an instruction booklet for it and there should've been a warranty on it.  If it's still under the warranty it shouldn't cost you anything to get it fixed.  Except maybe the postage.

Otherwise, look inside of your instruction book to see if you have it threaded right.  Also, you might want to check the k**b on the turn wheel on the right end of your machine that loosens the wheel to fill your bobbins.  And make sure it's tightened that is what runs your machine.

Hope I have helped you out.

    Good Luck to ya.

  3. Don't forget oil, too, if the manual so specifies.

I can't guess at the cause, but I can give you a couple of workarounds:

    1) set stitch length to 0, take a few stitches, set stitch length to normal, sew seam, set stitch length to 0 to tie off

    2) set stitch length to normal, sew seam, but hang on to the fabric to keep it from feeding for a few stitches at beginning and end of seam.
