Question:

My New Teddy Bear Hamster Trys to Escape

My new teddy bear hamster (that I just bought today) seems to be very smart. He is constantly finding new ways he could escape. I have blocked off where he tries to escape. I was just wondering if this is normal, if it is just part of the introduction to the cage phase Thanks

  1. All Pets have to get used to their new home until they learn everything about the house so they WILL try to escape.

  2. mine does but aka teddy bears are actually syrians (ive only heard)

well get an aquarium type cage

  3. He'll be exploring his surroundings. Hamsters are escape artists generally. Make sure he has plenty of things to chew and play with and this may distract him. What kind of cage do you have? If it's a cage with many escape routes, such as one with lots of tubes, then maybe see about getting a new one if the problem doesn't calm down. Give him a couple of days to settle in and see how it goes.

Just as a side note, I have a very active hamster who has just cracked a rib and twisted part of her cartilage. Although I don't have a cage with lots of tubes, my vet has recommended against them.

  4. yes.......my hamster is always climbing up the bars are chewing on them........hamster always want to get.......that is normal!

  5. I had the same problem with my mice, but some animals are just like that. I know for sure that if it escapes and drops it could die. We put a wire around the cage where it could escape and (because we had a tube cage) made sure everything was secure.

    Hope this helps!

  6. That may be a sign that they are bored/unhappy with their surroundings. My mice did that until I updated their cage....got them a safe wheel (solid floor no bars), built them shelves out of cardboard, gave them toilet paper roll tubing, got them a snack shak (an edible house with a straw roof and they love it) gave them lots of material to make bedding (TP, newspaper etc) and lots of hay also rather than lab blocks for food i make them and organic mix of food.

    now they love their cage

added - chewing on bars is actually a sign of distress so try to give them things to occupy them like non-plastic chew toys and what not. you could build things out of cardboard and sticks.
