My Nikon D40 wont let me download my pictures..?

I just bought a Nikon D40, and have been using it without problems for a few weeks.

Last week i took some pictures of my family at a get together, and today when i tried to upload them onto my computer, it will not let me open the pictures!

I had edited 2 pictures (red eye) and the edited pictures come up just fine. I know the SD card isnt damaged because i tired using another SD card that i have, and the same thing happens. I must have changed some sort of setting on the camera, but i cant figure out what it could be?!

Is there any way to reset EVERYTHING on the settings, and see if that works, or any other suggestions?

  1. There is a 2 button reset on the D40. hold the info and the magnifying glass button both for about 2 seconds these buttons have green dots beside them. This will reset your default.

A couple of thoughts but I really do not have enough info to tell whats going on

    1) if you were shooting RAW you can download the files but windows or vista would not opem them, You need a RAW converter like adobes camera raw that is in photoshop/elements or View NX which probably came with your nikon camera.

    2) Did you format the memory card before using it the first time. If not this can make it so you cannot download from the camera even though you could see the photos on playback in the camera. If this is the case you can sometimes use a card reader and open the files and move them. Again if they are JPEGs you could see them in windows or vista, if they are RAW after downloading it would be the same as #1

    #1.

3)If there is a chance you deleted the file then you can use a recovery program to get them if you have not taken photos over them or reformatted

  2. try buy an all in one memory card holding or just return it

  3. Need more information on what is happening when you plug it into the computer.

    - Are you using an USB cable, or a card reader?

    - If it is the USB cable, does the computer recognize the camera when it is turned on?

    - If the computer recognizes the camera, then what s/w are you trying to use for the transfer? The Nikon s/w or the windows file transfer?

If you are using USB, then one possibility that strikes me is checking the setting for how the camera is mounted. If you go into the settings menu, then there are two options for how the camera can be mounted. It is described in the manual. They caution that if you use the camera in the 'external drive' (default) mode, and disconnect the camera without first ejecting it, then things could go wrong. If something along those lines happened, I would suggest trying to power down both the camera (remove the batter completely) and the computer, and then try once again.
