My Onkyo TX-SR501 shuts off when I turn it up too loud. Why is it starting to do this?

I used to blast this system so I could hear it throughout the house but now I can't even hear it over 5 or 10 people in the room. I got new speakers as my 2 main speakers and used my old main speakers as the surround sound ones. I just recently put the new surround speakers in. Could this be drawing too much power? When the song or movie I'm playing gets to a loud bass sound the system shuts off and the red power light blinks. I can turn it on again but it has to be turned down and then it works fine. Its been working fine for the past 2 years. Do I need a new AV receiver?

  1. It's an obvious answer to this question.

Your penchant for blasting music that can be heard in the next county has provoked your neighbor to install a dB blocker into the system output.  Play it too loud and ZAMBO!! it shuts off.

The best solution is to be sensitive to others in this world and not force your desires upon them.  It's likely you didn't understand that statement, so try this.  TURN DOWN THE DAMNED VOLUME!!!

An next time you drive beside me with your full-blast thumper noise (clearly not real music) I'll flatten your tires!
