i have a dell inspiron 1501 laptop i already know what kind of ram to get if that's the problem. (i did buy it used from a used laptop store)

i have the sims collection series (the one that has every game) that my cousin gave to me, well i just installed it and it takes about 20min for anything to load, every thing moves slow (like the mouse and the screen) but when i played it on my dads laptop it played just fine. which is weird because my dads laptop is older than mine.

  1. Most computer users have been trained that if you want more speed for your computer, then add more memory. Well, this is true, in certain circumstances. But for most of the times, it really is just bad files in your registry files. Corrupted or missing registry files can make your computer too slow.

The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:

lists top 5 registry cleaner, you can download and scan for free.

    Good luck!

  2. Yes atleast 2gbs will run 90% of games old and new on the market

  3. The Sim's in general should run on your system without problems.  You have a built in video adapter that should run it without problems.  You can simply adjust the game resolution to a lower setting (800x600 if possible).  You can change the video settings within the game.  If this still doesn't run, try to run a Disk Cleanup, Virus Scan (AVG Free), Spyware Scan (Spybot), and a disk defragment.  Running windows XP, all of these solutions should solve your problem if fully completed.  Aside from this, make sure you start up and run the Sim's while your computer is plugged into the AC adapter.  People don't realize this, but most modern laptops run SLOWER off of the battery then they do while plugged in.  The processor and several components run at a lower speed to help conserve battery life.  If this fails you, you may need to re-install windows and start from scratch, but the solutions I've offered are thorough enough to solve most 'speed issues' while gaming on a laptop.

  4. your dads laptop might be older but it might have better hardware installed. it might not just be your ram. try buying the ram from somewhere you can easily return it if its not the case. could be the grafics cards & or processor. your laptop might be newer, but it might have vary low quality hardware installed. so the age for the most part isn't much of a factor. if the ram doesn't help at all, your basically gona need a new laptop... sorry... GOod luck

  5. Do you have the Sims 1 or the Sims 2? The Sims are known for not working so great on laptops; they're meant for desktops. Sometimes RAM is not the problem. If your game is slow or choppy, it usually has to do with your video card. An ATI Radeon or a NVIDA card will do, but they're pricey, and you can't update the video card on a laptop.

You could send it back to the manufacturer or a professional if you want to play Sims that bad, but it will come with a price. Check your laptop manual or "System Information" on your laptop to see what all your computer has and have someone look at it.

Hope I helped; sorry my answer was so long.

  6. If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

    2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

    1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser

    2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".

    3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.

    4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.

    5. Click OK.

    3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

    1. Open your Start menu.

    2. Click Run

    3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"

    4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab

    5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.

    6. Click "OK"
