It shows up as, let's say, user1 in the username box. I have to go in delete it, type in my username (user2) and then my password. I log off or shut down and when it turns back on it comes up with user1 in the username again. Not a huge deal but I would like it to save my username (user2) in the box instead.

  1. WARNING - Editing the registry is VERY dangerous.  Incorrect Editing could cause your computer considerable problems.

With that said, you can accomplish this by editing the registery.

    Click the Start Menu

    Click Run

in the Run Box, type "regedit.exe" (without the quotes) and press enter.

    The Registry Editor should open.

    Browse to HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Wi...

For best results change both the value of both DefaultUserName and AltDefaultUserName to your user name.

This will cause the username to display with your username the next time the machine needs to be logged on.

Be advised the this is updated in real time by Windows when someone logs in.  So if another user is logging into your PC, then their user name will appear when you come in to log back into your computer after them.

Also, to access the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive of the Registry requires that you have administrator rights on the PC, which you may or may not have depending on your domain policies and how your system is configured.

  2. Try the following:

    1. Click your start menu, go to "Run", then type in "Regedit.exe".

    2. Navigate to: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon

    3. Change the value of "DefaultUserName" to your username.

    4. If necessary, change the value of "DefaultDomainName" to your desired domain name.

I'm not sure if you need to reboot for the changes to take effect but it couldn't hurt. Next time you login you "should" be presented with the correct username.
