Every time I play my PS2 it freezes after a while some times it makes this

aaahhhhhhhhhnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn sound and the picture displayed stays there... the only way to stop it is to reset. I used to keep it inside an entertainment cabinet, but now knowing that it is damaging I keep it out during play time. However freezing still occurs, just less... what can i do?

**My warranty is not available, I've had it for 8 years!

  1. the heavier bulky version of the ps2 had this problem alot but can be fixed, basically dust from being trapped inside the cabinet has built up. open the ps2 quite easy just undo the screws, this allows you to run a cloth or hoover (at a distance) over it cleaning the inside, then just put the screws back in.

  2. The answer above regarding the dust is a fair assumption based on the info provided, hopefully the laser assembly isn't off track, although that can be fixed, just takes a little more work, there are guides on the net or if you have a non-franchise game shop nearby they may have a repair service.  The one I used to work at did and I have fixed several myself.  Just make sure if you do it yourself that you are extremely careful if you choose to take the laser assembly apart as it is a pain to get back together if you unscrew the wrong piece of it.  And make sure you don't take the lid off too fast when you first unscrew the outer case, there is a cable attached to it that allows the use of the power/eject buttons.  Most commonly I just used a can of compressed air to clean out the dust and a Q-Tip and some rubbing alcohol to clean the outer lens of the laser assembly.  Hope that helps.
