My PT Cruiser is making a noise when accelerating and stalled going uphill, what could this be and how much?

Yesterday, I noticed my PT Cruiser would make a noise when I accelerated whether I was in drive or neutral. The noise sounded kind of like a vacuum cleaner. It operated fine until a few hours later when I was going up a hill and it stalled out on me - good thing no one was behind me. The engine kicked back on a couple of seconds later as it started to slow down while still going up hill. I did nothing, it just came back on its own. Fortunately, I was only 2 minutes from my house and made it home safe. No engine light indicator has come on.

Any idea what this might be and how much it might cost?

Thanks!

  1. sounds like a vacuum leak...

  2. Sorry, no, not without seeing it.  Take it to your friendly mechanic and tell him what happened.

  3. you need to take it to a shop and have it checked out. it could be literally thousands of things causing this. its kind of like if you had a severe pain in the left side of your body you would go see a doctor, same thing here seek a professional that specializes in these types of scenerios

  4. a vacuum leak would make it shut down.  the only way it would start back up is if it is a standard.   This is kinda mistifying.  You need to see a mechanic....
